“THE LOCAL IS AN ALTERNATE REALITY”
Creatures of Near Kingdoms is an illustrated bestiary of 75 imaginary Southeast Asian plants and animals. A four-year-long collaboration, the book marries speculative prose by writer Zedeck Siew with linocut and fabric-pattern works by visual artist Sharon Chin. It presents odd, but also oddly familiar beings: memetic tigers; trees with bird souls; moral-policing mites that live in your eyelids. In this conversation, the creators Zedeck Siew & Sharon Chin will share their observations about the natural world; the way this region relates to myth, imagination, and the fantastic; and why the local is perhaps the most difficult reality for Malaysians to visit.
