About Sze:
Sze (b. 1983) is a visual designer who has had many disparate roles in the areas of art, design, and urbanism. Her work is predominantly concerned with the relationship between aesthetics and politics in urban spaces. These days, she is mostly researching for an upcoming exhibition under the aegis of the Japan Foundation’s Curators’ Workshop Programme 2016/17.
About Sharon:
Sharon (b. 1980) is an artist and writer living in Port Dickson. She’s made all sorts of things in all sorts of places, from museums to city sidewalks. In 2013, she bathed in public with a hundred people for ‘Mandi Bunga/Flower Bath’, a project at Singapore Biennale. ‘Weeds/Rumpai’, a series of paintings of weeds on political party flags is currently showing at Queensland Art Gallery as part of the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Awesome Canteen next door is pork free – they serve good coffee and food. Taman Paramount has plenty of good cheap food, most of it Chinese. There is a halal mamak next to Giant Supermarket nearby.

4. Is this free?
It’s free, but donations are very welcome, to offset the cost of renting the venue. We’ll have a donation box on the day.

5. What is an art biennale?
An art biennale (or biennial) is a large-scale exhibition/festival surveying contemporary art forms, trends, developments, occurring once every two years. ‘Biennial’ comes from the latin: bi- meaning ‘twice’, and -annual meaning ‘yearly’. Since the 1990s, the number of biennales worldwide has grown exponentially.
Kuala Lumpur will be having its inaugural biennale in 2017, organized mainly by the National Visual Arts Gallery of Malaysia.
Biennale (atau biennial) adalah acara atau pameran seni besar-besaran yang memaparkan bentuk, pergerakan dan perkembangan seni tampak semasa, diadakan setiap dua tahun. Perkataan ‘biennial’ berasal daripada bahasa latin: bi- berarti ‘dua’ dan -annual berarti ‘setiap tahun’. Sejak 1990-an, jumlah biennial didapati menambah berkali ganda di seluruh dunia.

6. What is a triennial? What is the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art?
A triennial is the same as a biennial, except that it happens once every three years (i.e. tri- means ‘three’, or ‘third’).
The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is the flagship art event organized by Queensland Art Gallery – Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia. Since the first APT in 1993, it has drawn 2.2 million visitors. The exhibition focuses on art from the asia pacific region, featuring artists like Montien Boonma, Pinaree Santipak, Tracy Moffat, Ai Wei Wei and Arahmaiani.

7. What work did Sharon show at APT8?
Sharon’s work for APT8 was an expansion of ‘Weeds/Rumpai’ – a series of paintings on political party flags featuring different varieties of weeds from her garden. The flags were collected from around her neighbourhood in Port Dickson, prior to Malaysia’s 13th General Election in 2013.
‘Weeds/Rumpai’ originally began in 2013, when the works were shown in a one-night art party/gig at Merdekarya. For APT8 in 2015, she made ten new paintings, essentially in the same style, but featuring different weeds.
She also made work for the Kid’s APT publication, an activity book for children.
Karya Sharon untuk APT8 merupakan tambahan kepada siri ‘Weeds/Rumpai’, iaitu sekumpulan catan yang menggambarkan pelbagai spesis rumpai liar, dilukis atas bendera parti politik yang dikumpulkan dari persekitarannya menjelang pilihan raya umum ke-13 pada tahun 2013.
Siri ‘Weeds/Rumpai’ dimulakan pada tahun 2013, dan dipamerkan dalam acara/gig satu malam di Merdekarya. Untuk APT8 pada 2015, Sharon telah menghasilkan sepuluh karya baru, mengikut gaya yang sama, tapi menggambarkan spesis rumpai yang lain.

8. What language will you use?
We will speak primarily in English, because that’s the language most comfortably spoken by Sze and Sharon. People are very welcome to join the discussion (in the language they feel easy with), but we won’t force it. There will be no time for ‘audience questions’, instead, you can participate (or not) at any point in the two-hour long session. Informal and relaxed is the order of the day.
