I was on a panel about art, feminism and performance at FEMSPEAK, an event organized by Universiti Malaya’s Gender Studies Programme in conjunction with International Women’s Day 2016.
I gave a brief introduction about performance art – my own and that of two other female artists, Intan Rafiza and Aisyah Baharuddin. Ivy Josiah’s keynote traced her personal history in dance, theatre and NGO work. Shh… Diam!, Mei Chern and Hana Aziz played great sets, and there was an open mic for the students.
It was an honor to speak at Universiti Malaya. My mother was an English lecturer there, and a huge part of my childhood was reading for hours in her office, or the university bookshop, while she taught classes.
